Hi there! Do you work with archival sources? We have a great tool for you. It's a step-by-step guide that explains how to build a database with DEVONthink 3 (Mac Only) to store all your research materials.
What Super Users are Saying
DEVONthink for Historians has helped me determine how to make the best use of DEVONthink for my historical research as I begin a new research project. I had used DEVONthink in the past, but didn’t feel like I was using the platform’s full capabilities. The lessons in this course are both informative and informal, and include PDFs with instructions you can download and refer to later. I expect to save both time and effort using the suggestions (and the SuperAnnotation script) Avigail and Ada have provided.— Dr. Joy Lintelman, Professor of History
“I enjoyed the insight into DEVONthink, especially the advice you gave of looking holistically at our database and letting that help guide our overall organization.”— Lindsey McNellis, Ph.D. Candidate in History, West Virginia University
Why buy the DEVONthink for Historians Starting Up and Super User Guides together? Do I need both?
No, of course not. Feel free to buy them separately, if you're not sure you're ready to commit to both. There are a few good reasons to buy both, however, including:
1) A discount!
2) The Super User Guide builds on the basics that we introduce in the Starting Up Guide and will teach you how to use DEVONthink 3's most powerful tools and features--the ones that will really save you time and effort when you transition from the research to the writing stage.
3) The Super User Guide comes with brand new tools that we created specifically for historians: custom-designed SuperAnnotation templates and an export script that sends citation information for archival documents, newspaper articles, and select secondary sources (books, book chapters, and journal articles) to Bookends, a reference and bibliography management software. One of historians' most time-consuming tasks is citing archival documents: not only do you have to keep the citation information in your database with your document so that you remember where it came from, but you also have to put it into a reference manager so that you can easily cite when you start writing. So many steps! Thankfully, we programmed a solution. Historians, rejoice!
Is this only for historians?
No! Despite its name, the Starting Up Guide is useful for anyone who wants to learn how to use DEVONthink 3 to organize their research--you can just tune us out when we start talking about "historiography" and "change over time." The Super User guide is slightly more specific to archival research, but we have been mindful that research looks different across (and even within) disciplines.

All templates and scripts in the Super User Guide are for use "as is." We have successfully tested them on multiple Mac machines. However, we do not warrant that the technology will work with your machine or that the operation thereof will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that any errors will be corrected.
We are not responsible for any damage or data loss incurred with the use of the scripts. You are responsible for following the installation instructions as well as understanding what the scripts do before you use them. We describe what the scripts and templates do -- and do not do -- in detail within the course.
In short, we have tried our best to provide you with fully operating templates and scripts, however, we can not guarantee that there will not be any problems and we are not responsible for any errors, damage, or data loss that may occur. If you have any challenges installing or using the scripts please contact us, and if you are experiencing any problems with your Mac after installation we recommend you contact AppleCare.
